Sept. 11th: Hero’s Pose

Yes, I realize that I am a day late…

But even when it is not September 11th, we should always remember those involved and those who continue to protect our freedom. During a class yesterday, I found myself getting choked up as I brought several Yogis into Hero … ‘How appropriate’ I thought.
So let’s continue to pay respect and play with Virasana (Hero Pose).

If we have knee, ankle or hip injuries/tightness, please be mindful as you attempt this posture. Start out with a block, a bolster, or a blanket under your sit bones to lift the and keep the out of the knees and ankles.  If we are comfortable, we can remove these supports and place our hips between the ankles.  Sitting tall, this is a great posture for meditation!  If we’d like to bring this pose into a deeper stretch, we can place the hands behind us, drawing the shoulder blades toward one another, lifting and opening our heart’s center.   If we still want a little more sensation we can gently lower to the elbows or relax all the way back.  We can also use the props mentioned before under the spine to support us as we journey into Reclining Hero.  Remember to move slowly and observe how the body feels in each option.  This is a great stretch for Quad muscles, especially for you !!

Whether or not we have mastered Hero’s Pose, always remember the Heroes that have come before us, and those who continue to walk among us.
