Fear of Final Relaxation

“OMG… what if I doze off, or snore?? What if my legs do that spastic jump thing that scares me and the people next to me? What if I drool? What if I do not hear the instructor call us out of Final and I get locked in the studio??  Ok, forget about it, I’m not going to relax enough to let any of these things happen. I’ll just lay here and think about my grocery list and the chores that are left to do.”  Sound familiar? You are not alone.

Guess what.  It’s okay.

Whatever you choose to do during Savasana (Final Relaxation) is time well-spent.  It is quiet time.  Something that soo few of us actually experience in our crazy, hectic lives.   So if we take that time to mentally acknowledge the unfinished projects, we reduce our stress level.  Better yet, if we take this time to focus on our breath and let go of everything else then we may find peace and clarity.  If we happen to relax to point of slumber, aahhhhh.

Don’t worry.  I am fairly positive that the instructor won’t leave you lying on your mat until the next class.  If you drool, chances are no one will notice, just please clean the mat when you are done.  As far as the snoring and spasms, ok, we may take notice, but we’ll try not to tease you  ;)

Whatever you do during the grande finale of class, is up to you, just please don’t exit the class during these crucial moments.  It’s not fair to your fellow Yogis.  If you have a time crunch, gather your belongings as the class begins to wind down, and as quietly as possible depart prior to the journey into bliss.

For the rest of us, if the instructor is calling us out of Final Relaxation, this doesn’t mean it’s a race to the ‘comfortable seated position’ either.  We can take our time, don’t worry if you’re not on schedule for the Om or Namaste’.  The teacher will understand and appreciate that you enjoyed your Savasana.

zzzzzzzz, oh, I mean Namaste’

The best part of my practice is often a really good savasana. Sometimes it is hard to achieve though because my body rejects the ultimate “slow down and relax” b/c there is too much I have to accomplish after class…still working on the staying in the moment bit :)
